The miracle of modern day travel is speed and comfort. With the right amount of cash (which isn’t really as much as some of us think), one can be halfway around the world. An eight hour flight from Manila will land you in New Delhi. Four hours to Tokyo. Three hours to Singapore. Two hours to Bangkok. A little over a century ago, it took weeks to get to Hong Kong. Airplanes have cut that down to three hours.
But its not all that great. Yesterday, i was reading an old article from "The Economist", about a couple who took the time to just cruise, spending three months going from one port to another, hopping their way across the Indian ocean from Western Australia to Kenya. It was incredible, taking time to visit out of the way islands, weighing anchor just to watch the stars.
I guess in today’s world, where profit and effeciency are paramount, where value is judged by the car you own, the job you have, the house you build, the friends you have– there is no space for the person who could just kick it all away and enjoy life. That kind of person would be labeled a "loser", a bum. Unproductive.
I believe in balance. One can be productive and still life life to its utmost. There is joy in the perfection of pursuit, the search for discipline.
A person with guts will form a life rich in substance, both for the self and for others.
